Westminster splits softball doubleheader at Fontbonne

ST. ANN - A back-and-forth battle Wednesday went in favor of the Westminster Blue Jays as they scored in the seventh inning to defeat the Fontbonne Griffins 9-8 to split a doubleheader.

Fontbonne won Game 1 10-1 in five innings.

Mackenzie Myers was productive in Game 2, reaching base four times with two singles, a double and a walk. Myers hit an RBI single in the four-run fourth inning and drove in two runs with a double in the four-run fifth.

Kasey Ginder had two RBI, including off a single in the fifth.

Myers, who led off the seventh with a single, scored the deciding run when Janae Shirk grounded out to the shortstop.

Laney Rosson added two singles for Westminster, which is 10-14 overall and 5-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Fontbonne is 8-9 overall and 4-2 in the SLIAC.

Three of the Griffins' eight runs off Erin Carr were earned. Carr earned her fourth win in the pitcher's circle, allowing nine hits while striking out one and walking three in a complete game.

In Game 1, Fontbonne scored four runs in the first inning, and three each in the third and fourth innings.

Myers led off the second with a double and scored on Ginder's single in the second.

Katie Price took the loss in the circle for the Blue Jays, allowing six earned runs and nine hits with three strikeouts and zero walks in four innings.

Westminster will host the Simpson College Storm for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blue Jay Field.
