College softball: William Woods swept by Columbia College

The William Woods Owls totaled just seven hits in Tuesday's doubleheader at Backer Sports Complex, losing 4-0 and 13-0 to the No. 11 Columbia College Cougars in American Midwest Conference play.

Hanna Knipp had two singles in the opener, while Ally Mahoney also finished with a single for William Woods.

Kalee Wall was the losing pitcher for the Owls. In seven innings, she gave up four runs (two earned) on 11 hits with one walk and one strikeout.

In Game 2, Columbia College scored three or more run in four of the game's five innings.

Avgustina Arbova went 3-for-3 with four RBI for Columbia College (23-5, 11-0 AMC), while Kacy Bergfeld hit a two-run homer.

Offensively for William Woods, Mahoney and Celeste Sermeno each hit a double, while Devyn Burton and Katie Gaus each had a single.

Alexis Hassler took the loss in the pitcher's circle for the Owls. In 2 innings, she gave up eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout. Ashlyn Towery pitched the last 2 innings and surrendered five runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks.

William Woods (12-16, 5-5 AMC) will play a conference doubleheader Thursday at Missouri Baptist.
