College Softball: William Woods sweeps Hannibal-LaGrange 2-0, 8-3

Junior starter Allison Waskow shut out the Lady Trojans on four hits as the host WWU Lady Owls triumphed 2-0 in the opener of Tuesday's AMC doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange.

Three players drove in two runs apiece to fuel an 11-hit attack in the nightcap to help William Woods University (20-13, 6-4 American Midwest Conference) finish off the sweep 8-3 and stretch its winning streak to six games.

Waskow - named the AMC pitcher of the week Monday - struck out two and walked two in the first game to raise her season record to 5-7.

The Lady Owls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore second baseman Dacrie Depping - a Fulton graduate - drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. William Woods then added its other run in the sixth on sophomore shortstop Ari Arnold's RBI single.

Senior center fielder Hannah Campbell finished 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored as the Lady Owls were also limited to four hits. Depping and Arnold were both 1-for-2.

Hannibal-LaGrange University (12-14, 5-5) put up a run in the top of the first in the second game to go in front. William Woods, though, countered with two runs in its half of the inning to grab the lead.

The Lady Trojans pulled even at 2-all when they scored a run in the second, but the Lady Owls broke out for four runs in the fourth to regain the lead for good. Hannibal-LaGrange - which managed only three hits - tacked on its other run in the fifth, but William Woods clinched the victory with two runs in the sixth.

Sophomore first baseman Alli Massey went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Lady Owls, while senior designated player Madison McCormick was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run. Arnold also finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Campbell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior left fielder Lindsay Van Tress was 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run.

Senior Sierra Jacques - throwing 4 1/3 innings in relief of freshman starter Madison Ausfahl - to log the win for the Lady Owls. Jacques (5-2) gave up one earned run on one hit, struck out none and issued a walk.

William Woods head coach Tracy Gastineau was honored before the doubleheader after she was named the 2016 NAIA Coach of Character last September.

The Lady Owls travel to St. Louis for an AMC doubleheader against Harris-Stowe State University at 2 p.m. Friday.
