College baseball: William Woods 13-9, Park 4-1

Junior designated hitter Connor Poulson and junior first baseman Easton Wallace both had two hits and three runs batted in as the Owls throttled the Pirates in the first game of Wednesday's AMC doubleheader at Backer Sports Complex.

Junior third baseman Alex Owens collected three hits and drove in two runs to spark a 12-hit attack as William Woods University completed a sweep with another decisive win in the nightcap.

The Owls - who have won four of their last five - raised their season record to 11-9 and moved to 4-7 in the American Midwest Conference. Park University slipped to 10-12 overall and 1-7 in the AMC.

William Woods went on a 15-hit rampage and put up runs in all but one inning in the opener while capitalizing on five Park errors. The Owls tallied a run in the bottom of the first, two runs apiece in the second and third, four runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.

Poulson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third, a two-run single in the fourth and scored three runs. Wallace was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the first, an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.

Junior shortstop Jordan Smith also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored a run for William Woods. Junior second baseman Marcus Gonzalez finished 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Andrew Fyffe worked 2 2/3 innings in relief of sophomore starter Ryan Long to pick up his first victory of the season for the Owls. Fyffe (1-0) gave up an earned run on two hits, struck out three and walked two.

Owens was 3-for-4 in the second game as William Woods logged three runs apiece in the first and second, added a run in the sixth and tacked on its final two runs in the eighth.

Sophomore right fielder Isaiah Gibbs went 1-for-4 with two RBI for the Owls. Gonzalez finished 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and scored three runs, while Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Wallace went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored three runs.

William Woods junior starter Spencer Burnham (3-1) scattered four hits, struck out seven, walked one and gave up an unearned run in six innings to earn the win.

The Owls travel to Williams Baptist (Ark.) University for an AMC series, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday. The two teams then play a single game at noon Saturday.
