College softball: William Woods goes 0-3 at Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Lady Owls (7-11) wrapped up their spring break trip with losses to Brenau (Ga.) University 8-4, No. 8 University of Mobile (Ala.) 11-4 and Thomas (Ga.) University 6-4 at the Gulf Coast Invitational on Friday.

Freshman catcher Ally Mahoney was 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning as William Woods University collected eight hits against Brenau. Junior third baseman Emma Taylor went 2-for-2 with a double and scored a run.

Sophomore first baseman Hanna Knipp - a North Callaway graduate - and freshman second baseman Taylor Bell were both 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Lady Owls.

Freshman starter Mychael Jett suffered the complete-game loss for William Woods, which was plagued by four errors. Jett (2-3) surrendered eight runs - only five earned - on 10 hits and struck out five.

Junior right fielder Devyn Burton finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and scored a run as the Lady Owls totalled eight hits against Mobile. Senior center fielder Anna Counts was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Junior first baseman Jessi Butler also went 1-for-3 with an RBI for William Woods. Freshman designated player Abbi Pringer finished 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run.

Senior starter Brittany Roady was tagged for 11 runs - just five earned - on 14 hits over five innings in taking the loss for the Lady Owls, who committed four errors again. Roady (3-2) recorded three strikeouts and issued three walks.

Burton was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored as William Woods logged nine hits against Thomas. Junior catcher Bri Devellano went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Counts finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Sophomore starter Alexis Hassler (1-3) went 5 1/3 innings in being pinned with the loss for the Lady Owls, who committed five errors this time. Hassler allowed six runs - only two earned - on seven hits and struck out four.

William Woods travels to Kansas City for a doubleheader at Avila University at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
