College baseball: Westminster 15, Simpson (Iowa) 7

The Blue Jays erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to topple the Storm in the first game of a doubleheader in Saturday's home opener at Saucier Field.

Westminster College (4-5) was down 6-2 when it used its outburst in the fourth to take a 10-6 lead. Simpson College got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Blue Jays pulled away by piling on five more runs in the sixth.

Senior catcher Branden Beeler was 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the fifth, as Westminster amassed 14 hits. Beeler scored two runs.

Sophomore third baseman Hayden Hirschvogel finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, three RBI and four runs scored for the Blue Jays. Senior first baseman Trevor Rhoads and freshman designated hitter Bryce McKinnon were both 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Westminster junior starter Skyler Dickneite went 4 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season. Dickneite (1-1) allowed seven runs - six earned - on six hits, struck out five and walked four.

Westminster and Simpson (1-2) conclude their weekend series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
