College baseball: Westminster 8-2, Nebraska Wesleyan 5-10

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Blue Jays are 3-5 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with the Prairie Wolves on Tuesday.

Senior left fielder Will Stonecipher (3-for-4), freshman second baseman Parker Schnieders (1-for-2) and senior catcher Branden Beeler (1-for-4) each drove in two runs as Westminster College prevailed in the first game.

Senior right fielder Ryan Clavin was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored as the Blue Jays totalled eight hits. Junior center fielder Derek Shikles - a New Bloomfield graduate - went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Westminster freshman starter Christopher Hoscher logged his first win of the season. Hoscher (1-0) allowed three unearned runs on two hits, walked five and struck out one.

Junior reliever Andrew Boessen gave up just one hit and struck out one in two scoreless innings to record his second save of the season for the Blue Jays.

Clavin finished 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and scored a run as Westminster piled up 10 hits in the nightcap. Junior left fielder Tanner Nowatzki was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while freshman pinch-hitter Hunter Muholland went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Sophomore starter Jacob Adrian went only two innings in taking the loss for the Blue Jays. Adrian (0-1) gave up six runs - two earned - on three hits, issued five walks and struck out two.

Westminster plays its home opener this weekend with a four-game series against Simpson (Iowa) College. Doubleheaders start at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Saucier Field.
