College softball: Lady Owls earn split with Grace

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - William Woods University sophomore third baseman Alexis Hassler had two hits and drove in all three runs in the Lady Owls' 3-1 victory over Grace (Ind.) College in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.

William Woods - which was edged by Grace 2-1 in the opener - is now 7-6 on the season. The Lady Owls have won six of their last seven.

Hassler went 2-for-2 in the second game as William Woods - which finished with seven hits - put up two runs in the top of the fourth inning and added its other run in the sixth. Junior catcher Bri Devellano was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and junior right fielder Devyn Burton finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Senior starter Brittany Roady allowed just one unearned run while scattering four hits to collect the complete-game win for the Lady Owls. Roady (3-1) struck out six and walked two.

William Woods was limited to five hits in dropping the first game. The Lady Owls produced their lone run in the first when senior center fielder Anna Counts reached on an error to lead off the inning and eventually scored on junior right fielder Lindy Wilson's groundout.

Grace went in front to stay by scoring both of its runs in the second.

Junior left fielder Celeste Sermeno went 2-for-4 with a double for William Woods. Freshman designated player Abbi Pringer was also 2-for-4 and Devellano finished 1-for-2.

Hassler started for the Lady Owls and went five innings in taking the loss. Hassler (1-2) gave up two earned runs on five hits, issued five walks and struck out four.

William Woods continues its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Judson (Ill.) University at 10 a.m. today.
