College men's basketball: Fontbonne 95, Westminster 90

The visiting Griffins took control over the last 10 minutes of the game to hand the Blue Jays their second consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss Wednesday night.

Westminster College (5-8, 4-3 SLIAC) only trailed 40-38 at halftime and owned slim leads on four different occasions in the second half. Sophomore forward Jaxon Althaus' layup put the Blue Jays on top 61-60 with 11:06 to go.

Fontbonne University countered by taking the lead for good on a layup by Cody McKinney with 10:02 left. The Griffins gradually extended their advantage from there, going up by as many as 12 points.

Althaus tallied 21 points to guide four players in double figures for Westminster, which only shot 38 percent (29-of-77) from the field. Sophomore guard Ethan Thompson hit five 3-pointers in following with 20 points and junior guard Emil Spriggs provided 16.

Sophomore guard Makygh Galbreath - a Fulton graduate - came off the bench to chip in 10 points and collected a team-high seven rebounds as the Blue Jays were manhandled on the boards 54-32.

Anthony Jones answered with a game-high 23 points to spark four players in double figures for Fontbonne (7-7, 5-2), which shot 44 percent (36-of-81) as a team. Jared Woodcock produced 21 points, Caden Clark finished with 14 and Noah Coddington had 10.

Westminster will seek to rebound when it plays a SLIAC home game against Spalding (Ky.) University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
