College women's basketball: Westminster 79, Fontbonne 75

ST. LOUIS - The Lady Blue Jays outscored the Lady Griffins 23-18 in the fourth quarter to log the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Westminster College - avenging a 76-68 loss to Fontbonne University on Jan. 15 in Fulton - raised its season record to 11-12 and its SLIAC mark to 10-6. The Lady Blue Jays have won five of their last six.

Westminster was down 22-12 after one quarter Saturday, but countered by outscoring the Lady Griffins 24-16 in the second quarter to close within 38-36 at halftime. The Lady Blue Jays edged Fontbonne 20-19 in the third quarter to make it a one-point game at 57-56.

Westminster went in front to stay 67-65 on senior forward Mikalyn Callahan's jumper with 5 minutes, 39 seconds remaining.

Sophomore guard Reese Arnold was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final :49 to seal the victory.

Callahan and Arnold finished with 22 points apiece to spark the Lady Blue Jays, who shot 46 percent (25-of-55) from the field. Junior guard Kallee Dowler connected on 5-of-11 3-pointers in logging 21 points.

Callahan pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as Westminster was edged on the boards 31-30.

Rylee Stafford produced a game-high 24 points to lead three players in double figures for Fontbonne (14-9, 13-3), which shot 45 percent (29-of-65) as a team. Raven Venegas was next with 23 points and Jillian Venegas contributed 13.

The Lady Blue Jays travel to Louisville, Ky., for a SLIAC matchup against Spalding University at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Westminster defeated Spalding 75-70 in overtime Jan. 18 in Fulton.
