College men's basketball: Simpson (Iowa) 99, Westminster 65

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Blue Jays shot a lackluster 37 percent (25-of-68) in tumbling to 0-3 on the season after Saturday's loss to the Storm in the A-R-C/SLIAC Classic.

Westminster College made just 10-of-35 shots (29 percent) in the first half as Simpson College (3-1) crafted a commanding 60-28 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore forward Jaxon Althaus - who had four 3-pointers - paced the Blue Jays with 19 points. Junior guard Steph Campbell came off the bench to supply 11 points and sophomore guard Landon Harrison contributed 10.

Sophomore guard Ethan Thompson collected six rebounds as Westminster was outrebounded 40-31.

Kyle Wagner connected on 7-of-13 shots - including 5-of-10 from behind the arc - to spark the Storm with a game-high 20 points. Nick Janssen knocked down all six of his 3-point attempts to follow with 18 points as Simpson shot 63 percent (17-of-27) from behind the arc..

Conor Riordan added 13 points for the Storm, who shot 55 percent (33-of-59) overall. Adam Reiter and Parker Lange chipped in with 11 points apiece.

The Blue Jays opened play in the Classic with an 87-54 loss to Buena Vista on Friday night. Westminster was only down 47-36 at halftime, but was outscored by Buena Vista 40-18 in the second half.

Junior guard Emil Spriggs hit 6-of-9 shots in tallying 15 points as the only player to make it into double figures for the Blue Jays. Westminster shot just 35 percent (18-of-51) as a team and committed 22 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Makygh Galbreath - a Fulton graduate - pulled down a team-high five rebounds as the Blue Jays were roughed up on the boards 48-30.

DJ McNeal delivered a game-high 23 points in a reserve role to steer Buena Vista, which shot 44 percent (32-of-72) from the field. Timothy Jeffries provided 16 points and Dominic Sesma had 14.

Westminster travels to NCAA Division II McKendree (Ill.) University for an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
