College football: Northwestern (Minn.) 27, Westminster 17

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Blue Jays had their two-game winning streak halted in ending the season at 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference after Saturday's loss to the Eagles.

The University of Northwestern - which built a 17-0 lead - improved to 3-6 on the season and 3-4 in the UMAC.

The Eagles quickly jumped in front on Ryan Flanigan's 75-yard touchdown pass to Evan Pruitt with 14 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first quarter. Blake Mitchell's 22-yard field goal made it 10-0 with 9:23 to play in the quarter and Payton Bowdry followed with a 1-yard touchdown run with 12:11 remaining in the second quarter.

Westminster College was down 17-7 at halftime after sophomore quarterback Wyatt Ellis tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Seth Cline with 2:47 to go in the first half.

The Blue Jays trimmed their deficit to seven points on sophomore kicker Tim Branneky's 42-yard field goal at the 3:06 mark of the third quarter. Mitchell, though, answered with a 37-yard field goal with 6:36 left in the game to make it 20-10 and Northwestern's final score came on a Bowdry 12-yard touchdown run with 1:24 to play.

Westminster capped off its scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Ellis to junior wide receiver Alec Fleetwood - a Fulton graduate - with :16 remaining.

Ellis was 11-of-22 passing for 124 yards and one interception as the Blue Jays finished with 294 yards of total offense. Sophomore running back Taylor Dobbins rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries and sophomore wide receiver Jamal Martin had three catches for 41 yards.

Bowdry rushed for a game-high 105 yards in 23 attempts as the Eagles compiled 287 yards of total offense.
