College men's soccer: Blue Jays soccer team bows in SLIAC semis

ELSAH, Ill. - The No. 4 seed Westminster College Blue Jays soccer team's season came to an end after a 2-1 loss to No. 1 Principia College in the semifinals of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament Wednesday night.

Westminster - which also bowed at Principia 2-1 in the regular-season finale last Saturday - ended the season with a 5-12 record.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead Wednesday night when junior forward Justin Gerdiman scored in the 20th minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Collin Murray.

Principia (11-6) pulled even on Kaleb Keller's goal in the 37th minute and then Keller supplied the game-winner in the 49th minute.

Westminster outshot the Panthers 17-14, but Principia finished with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Blue Jays logged a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Principia will square off against No. 2 seed Spalding (Ky.) University for the SLIAC title tonight. Spalding advanced with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 seed Greenville (Ill.) University in Wednesday night's other semifinal.
