Our Opinion: In search of a few Good Samaritans

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan, who comes across a badly beaten Jew along the road. Jews and Samaritans hated each other, but the Samaritan stopped to help the half-dead man, who was ignored by others.

It's that spirit of helping others, often strangers, that makes Jefferson City such a great community. People help others in our community in many ways, often providing donations of time, money or both.

We've written stories about many such people. But there are many unsung heroes. Do you know of any such people? If so, we'd like to know about them.

The News Tribune and Redemption Inside the Walls are partnering to award five individuals with the new John G. Fisher Good Samaritan Award. It recognizes locals who go above and beyond to help others.

Nominate a good samaritan by visiting www.newstribune.com/special-sections/contests/ or emailing [email protected]. Include the nominee's name, a 200-word essay about why the nominee is a good samaritan and a photo of the nominee. You have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday to submit a nomination.

Recipients of the award should:

- Live in Mid-Missouri.

- Do good deeds out of compassion and not because of any hope of reward.

- Possibly shy away from attention about his or her efforts.

- Unselfishly help others and extends mercy, especially to strangers.

Following nomination submissions, the community will vote on who it believes deserves the John G. Fisher Good Samaritan Award. Voting will start at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 7 at www.newstribune.com/special-sections/contests/ and run through Sept. 12.

Award recipients will receive their awards at the Sept. 19 Redemption Inside the Walls concert. Recipients will also receive tickets to the concert, with Michael W. Smith set to headline the show.

We ask that you take a few minutes to help us shed some light on a few very deserving people in our community.
