The Missouri Department of Transportation has opened the public comment period for a potential project on Interstate 70 in Columbia.

The project would remove the I-70 westbound ramp to Business Loop 70, including the bridge over eastbound I-70, and add a deceleration lane for the westbound I-70 exit ramp at Rangeline Street.

The project would also adjust signage to extend the Business Loop to the I-70/Route 63 Connector via the Conley Road extension.

The estimated $1.2 million project does not have a proposed timeline and is not yet included in MoDOT's Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan.

The westbound exit ramp bridge was constructed in 1957 and is approaching the end of its service life, MoDOT said.

Additionally, the left-side exit is confusing for drivers and its removal could reduce crashes by 25-70 percent, according to MoDOT studies.

The exit's roughly 2,800 daily drivers would be redirected to the I-70 interchanges at Rangeline Street and Route 63 at Broadway Street.

Missouri motorists can provide feedback and ask questions about the project through Sept. 24 at modot.org/ BusinessLoopRamp.
