A 41-year veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves and the Missouri National Guard will seek Rep. Travis Fitzwater's seat in the Missouri House of Representatives in 2022.

Jim Schulte announced his intention to run as a Republican in the upcoming primary election for the House District 49 seat next year. Fitzwater, a Republican, will reach his term limit during the upcoming second session of the General Assembly.

District 49 includes much of Callaway County, including Fulton, and a portion of Cole County northeast of Binder Park. Schulte owns a farm in Callaway County.

The secretary of state website states the first day to file for the Aug. 2 primary is Feb. 22.

In his news release announcing the candidacy, Schulte said he can no longer stand by "and watch radical liberals tear down all that America stands for." He said Democrats' inability to lead are weakening the nation.

Biden's handling of Afghanistan insults all who have served in the military, he said, particularly those who have served in the Middle East.

Schulte served two combat tours in Afghanistan, earning multiple honors, the release said.

Schulte was a Missouri Highway Patrol officer and participates in activities with the Cole County Sheriff's Office.

He's running because he feels called to a life of service, Schulte said in the release. He said he's pro-life, pro-Second Amendment and pro-law enforcement.

"I never picture myself a politician - and still don't - but I've learned that if you want something done right, you have to roll up your sleeves and get to work," he said.
