Tennessee officers fatally shoot man after pursuit on I-75

CARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Tennessee fatally shot a man while attempting to take him into custody after a pursuit on Interstate 75, authorities said.

Officers attempted to stop a car traveling along the Appalachian Highway in Caryville in connection to a robbery in Jacksboro, but the driver refused to pull over, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

Officers from the Caryville Police Department and deputies with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office pursued the driver onto I-75 until the driver crashed into several vehicles including a Tennessee Highway Patrol cruiser stopped in a construction zone, the statement said.

Efforts to take the driver into custody escalated leading the trooper, a Caryville officer and a Campbell County deputy to fire shots, striking the man, the bureau said. He was pronounced dead.

A female passenger in the car was injured and taken to a local hospital.

An investigation is continuing. No further information was immediately released.
