Numbers up for 2021 Missouri firearms deer season

Missouri hunters killed nearly 190,000 deer during the November portion of firearms season, according to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The 2021 season netted about 10,000 more deer than the 2020 season, which is a 5.7 percent increase.

The season, which ran from Nov. 13-23, harvested 187,967 deer. Of that number, 101,501 were antlered bucks, 16,435 were button bucks and 70,031 were does.

The top harvest counties were: Franklin with 4,144 deer harvested, Texas with 4,050 and Howell with 3,244.

In Central Missouri, hunters in Cole County killed 1,137 deer, 1,833 in Boone, 3,154 in Callaway, 1,594 in Maries, 2,110 in Miller, 1,156 in Moniteau, 2,684 in Morgan and 2,645 in Osage.

Last November, hunters checked 177,769 deer with 96,298 being antlered bucks, 16,128 being button bucks and 65,343 being does.

MDC reported two firearms-related hunting incidents during this firearms season with both being non-fatal and self-inflicted.

Missouri's archery deer and turkey season runs through Jan. 15. The late youth portion of firearms season runs from Friday through Sunday. The antlerless portion of firearms deer season runs Dec. 4-12 followed by the alternative methods portion Dec. 25 through Jan. 4.
