7-year-old Missouri boy dies after falling off a hayride

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. (AP) - A 7-year-old Missouri boy died Saturday after he fell off a hayrack ride and was struck by the trailer he had been riding in.

The Jackson County Sheriff's office said the accident was reported around 7:45 p.m. Saturday in a rural area outside Lee's Summit. Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forté said on Twitter deputies and paramedics who responded learned the boy, who was from Lee's Summit, had been critically injured.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol report said the boy was "clinging" to the trailer that was being pulled by a John Deere tractor after he fell out of it. The child died at a hospital Saturday night.

The Kansas City Star reported Forté said on Twitter Sunday the boy was struck by the trailer after he fell off.

The boy's name was not immediately released because he is was a juvenile.
