The third day of livestock judging came stampeding in Friday at the Callaway Youth Expo.

After several months, local 4-H and FFA members were ready to show off their bucket calves and market steers.

Breeding and dairy cows were shown in the morning, but many children at varying ages were going to take their turns in the evening, Stephanie Murphy said.

Murphy said she typically judges sheep, which were shown Wednesday at the Expo, and also helps tabulate results for the other competitions. She said children 1-12 years old show the bucket calves and 8-to 21-year-olds show the market steers, leading to a wide range of eager exhibitors when the Expo rolls around.

She said the animal's look is an important factor when judging them, but the rate of gain also plays a factor when it comes to steers. The steers are weighed in twice during the year - first in January and then the day of the shows during the Expo.

After the cows take their walks, Murphy said they are sold this evening during the livestock and ham sale. Among the other events on the schedule today for the last day of the Expo are the shows for the rabbits, chickens and horses.
