There's a patch without trees where Memorial Park meets Stinson Creek.

The hot sun beats down on the creek, creating an unhealthy environment for the creek and aquatic life.

Recently, the Fulton Stream Team announced it received a $1,485 grant to help provide shade and stabilize the bank.

"The creek is hot there, and it could use the shade," said Courtney Coffelt, of the Fulton Engineering Department and the Fulton Stream Team.

Missouri Department of Conservation community forester Ann Koenig suggested trees be planted along the creek to help stabilize the creek bank, Coffelt said.

The team also planted six trees thanks to a tree giveaway from Forest ReLeaf earlier this month.

This new set of trees, which will include cottonwood, sycamore, river birch, silver maple, black walnut and pin oak, will be planted along the creek near Memorial Park and Business 54. Koenig suggested the location, Coffelt said.

"I wanted to plant where they were very visible to people," Coffelt said.

In addition to helping create a healthy riparian corridor, some of the trees will serve as a memorial to Callaway County veterans who were killed during the Vietnam War. A local Boys Scout troop will help plant the trees.

"That's one thing that I struggle with on Veterans Day each year - I have the day off, but what to I do exactly?" she said.

Coffelt expects to get the trees delivered and planted sometime in the next month. She hopes the trees will allow give locals a place to come to reflect and honor local veterans.

"I hope people will enjoy watching the trees grow," Coffelt said.

The grant comes from Trees Forever Granting a Better Tomorrow program.
