Authorities investigating death of teen

Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism confirmed Friday afternoon his department was conducting an investigation into the death of a teenager.

In a news release, Chism said the Callaway County Joint Communications Center received a call at 10:40 p.m. Thursday about a person possibly jumping off the Routes J/DD overpass along Interstate 70 in western Callaway County. At 10:41 p.m., secondary calls were received indicating a person was laying in the driving lanes of I-70.

Callaway County deputies and Missouri Highway Patrol troopers responded, and life-saving efforts were attempted. Chism said emergency medical personnel on the scene declared the person had died.

Chism also said the person was ultimately identified as a 14-year-old student who attended North Callaway High School.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the incident with the assistance of the Boone-Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office, Chism said.

"Preliminary findings to this point indicate this incident as being a suicide, albeit, a final ruling will be made by the medical examiner's office after completion of the investigation," Chism said.
