Westminster College President Fletcher Lamkin announced his retirement Wednesday.
Lamkin, who has served as president of the college twice, will officially step down June 30.
"Serving as president of Westminster has been one of the highlights of my life," Lamkin wrote in a letter to alumni.
Plans for a replacement have not yet been announced.
In the meantime, Donald P. Lofe Jr., who currently serves as chair of the Westminster Board of Trustees, will become interim president and chief transformation officer. Lamkin will stay on as a formal advisor during the transition process until the end of 2020.
"I strongly believe that Don, a Westminster alumnus who has devoted so much of his time and efforts to the college over his board tenure, is exactly the right person to become the interim president at this time," Lamkin wrote.
Current board Vice Chair James C. Morton Jr. will take over the position of board chair beginning June 1.
Lamkin first served as president between 2000-07. He was asked to return in 2017 after then-President Benjamin Ola. Akande and six members of the board resigned.
Lamkin's achievements include expanding and modernizing facilities, enrollment growth and fundraising gains during his first term and stabilization during his second, according to a news release.
In his retirement announcement, Lamkin said it is time to pass on the torch to new leaders.
"The timing of this retirement will enable me to relinquish the responsibilities of the presidency at the end of the current academic year to provide for the implementation of a thoughtful transition plan, which I am confident will enable the college to continue its upward trajectory without interruption," Lamkin wrote.
In the news release, Lofe said he looks forward to meeting with alumni to discuss the college's future.
Lofe has served on the board for eight years and was awarded Westminster's Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award in 2010. Lofe has been a senior executive for insurance, community lending and other financial and mortgage-related entities, including at IBM Corporation.
Morton began on the board in 2011 and also received the lifetime achievement award in 2003.
"I have worked closely with Mr. Lofe and Mr. Morton over the past several years," Lamkin said in the news release. "Both Don and Jim are experienced professionals and bring strong leadership to the college. I wish them much success in their new roles and look forward to working with them during the transition."
