Fire engineer promoted to captain

After years with the Fulton Fire Department, Steve Sessler has been promoted to captain.

Sessler began working with the department in 1999 as a volunteer before joining the department full-time in 2008.

"My father served for the Fulton Fire Department for 38 years," Sessler said. "He retired in 2008, and that's when I started full-time."

Firefighting is a tradition in the Sessler family - his father and uncle were firefighters.

"It's been a heritage thing - before I retire, we will have exceeded 100 years of service," Sessler said.

During his time with department, he's been a firefighter and an engineer.

"I've started from the bottom and worked my way up to now being a captain," Sessler said.

When hiring a new captain, the fire department goes through a hiring process involving a written test, practical test and interviews, Fire Chief Kevin Coffelt said.

"He did very well on all the three parts of it, and he has 12 years experience with the department," Coffelt said. "He has a lot of knowledge of how the department runs. Steve's got a lot of knowledge of fire services and a lot of mechanical knowledge as well."

Sessler said his first shift as captain last week went well.

"I work with a good group of guys, and they're very knowledgeable and they make my job easy," Sessler said.
