Recycling, yard waste pickup on pause for holiday

The City of Fulton will no longer offer recycling and yard waste pickup during weeks with a federal holiday.

Trash pickup will continue as normal, with customers who normally have their trash picked up Monday receiving Tuesday trash service instead.

However, during the week of Labor Day, Fulton residents will have to hold onto their recycling and yard waste until the following week. Collection will resume Sept. 9.

This will be the norm going forward, City Clerk Courtney Crowson said.

"We will not be doing recycling and yard waste during holiday weeks," she said.

A representative of Fulton's solid waste department said this is how the city has handled holidays in years past. The rationale has to do with staffing and how routes work.

Fulton is split up into five waste pick-up routes, which personnel complete Monday through Friday. When, for example, a holiday falls on Monday, personnel have to do double trash pickup Tuesday. That doesn't leave enough time to complete recycling and yard waste routes - so personnel end up scrambling to complete three days worth of those routes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Waiting out the week and picking up slightly more waste while driving the normal routes should simplify things vastly, the representative said.
