Steedman fire victim identified

STEEDMAN - After notifying next of kin, the Callaway County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the woman found dead following a Saturday fire in Steedman.

The remains of Wilhelmina Young, 80, were recovered following a fire in the 9000 block of Route CC. An autopsy was completed Tuesday morning at the Boone-Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office in Columbia, Sheriff Clay Chism said, but a final ruling as to the cause of death is still forthcoming and will follow a toxicology examination.

The Missouri Fire Marshal's Office is continuing to assist the Callaway County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. No foul play is suspected.

At 7:55 p.m. Saturday, the Callaway County Joint Communications Center received a report of a structure fire in the 9000 block of Route CC near Steedman. Fire personnel with the South Callaway Fire Protection District were dispatched. Mutual aid response was provided by the Central Callaway Fire Protection District.

Fire units arrived at the home at 8:07 p.m. and found it ablaze. Based on preliminary information, firefighters believed the structure was occupied at the time of fire. Callaway County Sheriff's Office personnel also responded to the scene, and the Missouri Fire Marshal's Office was contacted and responded to assist with the investigation.
