One found dead in burning Callaway County home

One person died in a building that caught on fire Saturday night in Callaway County, according to a report by the sheriff's department.

At 7:55 p.m., the Callaway County Joint Communications Center received a report of a structure fire in the 9000 block of State Road CC near Steedman. Fire personnel with the South Callaway Fire Protection District were dispatched. Mutual aid response was provided by the Central Callaway Fire Protection District. 

Fire units arrived at the home at 8:07 p.m. and found it ablaze. Based on preliminary information, firefighters believed the structure was occupied at the time of fire. Callaway County Sheriff's Office personnel also responded to the scene, and the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office was contacted and responded to assist with the investigation.

At 11:35 p.m., an occupant was found deceased within the structure. The deceased person was ultimately transported to the Boone-Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office in Columbia. Deputies have made preliminary next-of-kin notification; however, the identity of the decedent is not being released at this time so other next-of-kin contacts can be made.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office is continuing to assist the Callaway County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. No foul play is suspected.
