Despite tornado damage to some of its facilities, Jefferson City Public Schools will still have summer school starting next week.
All students in grades 10-12 will attend summer school at Lewis and Clark Middle School starting May 28. Parents can visit jcschools.us/jcschools to see where student parking and parent drop-off will be located.
Summer school originally was supposed to be at Simonsen 9th Grade Center, but the building suffered damage from Wednesday's tornado.
"While we recognize that many families have been impacted by this week's disaster, we are committed to providing a safe place for students to learn, gather, and have a balanced meal," school district officials said in a Friday news release.
JCPS is hosting the American Red Cross shelter at Thomas Jefferson Middle School for residents displaced by tornado damage. The school district will continue to host the shelter after summer school starts Tuesday, according to the news release.
"Thankfully, we have enough space in the building to ensure the shelter accommodations will be separate from spaces being used by students to ensure a safe learning environment," the news release states.
Since several city streets are closed due to either tornado damage or flooding, First Student buses will try to get to bus stop locations as close to the designated pick-up and drop-off times, the news release notes, but there may be some delays due to drivers having to adjust their routes.
JCPS advises in its news release to wait 30 minutes after the student's expected afternoon drop-off time before calling the district, as district officials will try to notify guardians within that time frame about delays.
There will not be numbers on the First Student buses, so guardians should refer to the placard near the bus door that lists the bus route number.
