Troop F reports first fatal wreck of 2019

State troopers also reported a fatal car accident in Callaway County that occurred 9:20 p.m. Jan. 3.

The crash killed Charles C. Eichholz, 82, of Westphalia, an occupant in a 2019 Chevrolet 2500 truck driven by William T. Schulte, 78, also of Westphalia.

Schulte was driving west on U.S. 54 near County Road 318, following a 2008 Ford Escape driven by Justin C. Ward, 22, of New Bloomfield.

The Ford Escape slowed, and troopers said it made an improper left turn from the right lane, causing the truck to hit it. The Escape skidded into the median and stopped while the truck came to rest in the left westbound lane.

Eichholz was pronounced dead at 11:19 p.m. at St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City. This is Troop F's first traffic fatality in 2019.

Anderson began to make a turn in front of West, causing the motorcycles to collide. West was thrown from his motorcycle.

Both men were transported to a hospital with moderate injuries. Police said both drivers were wearing non-MoDOT-approved helmets.
