Fulton student dies in motorcycle accident

A Fulton High School student died Sunday in a motorcycle accident, according to a Missouri Highway Patrol report.

Sam Schiltz, 18, was riding his 1999 Kawasaki ZX900 west on Route UU, just east of Fulton. At about 4:20 p.m., he failed to negotiate a curve and travelled off the right side of the road. Schiltz was ejected from the motorcycle and, despite using a safety device, received fatal injuries.

He was transported to the Fulton Medical Center and pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m., the report added.

Schiltz would have entered his senior year at Fulton High School this month, Fulton Public Schools Superintendent Jacque Cowherd confirmed.

"I understand that he participated in several activities and was a promising young man," Cowherd said Monday. "He will be missed by his classmates and faculty."

Attendees of Monday morning's Callaway Chamber of Commerce teacher appreciation breakfast observed a moment of silence for Schiltz.
