Police, Fire departments to compete for blood donations

The Fulton Police and Fire departments are calling on people to give the gift of life through the fourth annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Friday.

"We see a lot of people come out and donate at the blood drive," Rick Hughes, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said. "We put the event on every year to help the American Red Cross."

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs life-saving blood every two seconds.

Hughes said the people of Callaway County are generous, as the community donates an average of 30-40 units of blood a year.

A competition will be held between the local police and fire officials.

"It's a friendly competition between police and firefighters," Fulton Fire Chief Todd Farley said. "It's an event where we're trying to increase the blood drive for those in need."

Hughes said the local authorities have a great time with the competition in hopes of winning a trophy.

"It's a nice, big trophy," Hughes said.

"It's a great way to give back to the community," said Carol Poeschel, receptionist of the Fulton Police Department. "It's another way of helping to save lives."

Donors at the blood drive can vote for who they think should win the trophy - the Police Department or the Fire Department.

It will take place Friday from 2-7 p.m at the Police Station Community Room, 935 S. Business 54, Fulton.

Each donor will receive a complimentary T-shirt while supplies last.
