NEW BLOOMFIELD - Mike and Teresa Cuno, owners of Rooster Creek Company, are preparing to host their first annual quilt show.

"We wanted to make it open to everyone to show their skills," Teresa Cuno said.

The show is scheduled for 10 a.m.-6 p.m. July 14-16 at the Heart of Nashville Event Center, 8285 State Road J, New Bloomfield.

Edie McGinnis of Kansas City Star Quilts, author of 18 quilt books and a quilter for more than 35 years, will make an appearance and speak with visitors. The show will also feature vendors, demonstrations, awards, tea and prizes. Lunch and concessions will be available.

Teresa Cuno said she decided to host the quilt show after receiving second- and third-place ribbons at a large quilt show at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia in 2011.

"I was shocked," Teresa Cuno said of her placings. "I think a lot of us have more skill than we give ourselves credit."

Quilting is a part of America's history, Cuno added.

"It brings you back to your heritage," she said. "It's fun quilting by yourself or with friends."

Cuno started making quilts in 2011. She and her husband opened their fabric and sewing store in 2014 but will soon be moving the business to 176 W. Simon Blvd., Holts Summit. The store also offers classes for all levels of quilters, she said.

Cuno said she will bring Rooster Creek Company's "Friendship Quilt" to the quilt show. This quilt consists of names of visitors of the business who have a special connection or friendship with the Rooster Creek Company, she said.

Charlotte Braun and Sharryn Otto are two visitors who enjoy spending time at the store.

"This is kind of like my second home," Otto said, adding she quilts there several times a week.

Braun also takes classes there.

"There was no turning back after I found it," Braun said. "I've been to a lot of quilt shops, and this one is just like no other."

Admission is $5 for the quilt show and $25 for the awards show.
