North Callaway boys wrestling’s Kimbley takes first in final regular season tournament

BUFFALO -- Competing in their final regualr season meet, the North Callaway Thunderbirds were short two starters, and they placed sixth out of 16 teams in the Buffalo Thundering Herd Tournament Saturday at Buffalo High School.

The Thunderbirds, ranked 10th in Class 1 by Missouri Wrestling, scored 89 points, six away from a top-five finish. Marshfield topped the leaderboard with 136 points, Versailles finished second with 123½ points and Camdenton took third with 107½ points.

"This was a larger tournament with 16 teams and (a) majority of the teams being Class 2 and 3," North Callaway boys wrestling coach Ronnie Kimbley said.

Lane Kimbley earned gold at 138 pounds for North Callaway, scoring 17 points and going 4-0 with two pins. In the first-place match, Lane Kimbley (39-1) won by a 6-2 decision over Marshfield's MJ Gritts (43-4).

While he placed third, Collin Moore posted the Thunderbirds' most points, 19, at 144, and went 3-1 with three pins. In the third-place match, Collin Moore (35-6) won by fall (:46) over Camdenton's Benjamin Hughes (9-4).

At 165, North Callaway's Wyatt Haden finished fifth, notched 15½ points and went 4-1 with four pins. In the fifth-place match, Haden (27-15) won by fall (:56) over Owensville's Kaleb Wells (17-7).

Casper Safranksi received bronze at 190 for North Callaway, scoring 10½ points and going 4-1 with three pins. To finish third, Safranksi (34-8) won by a 3-2 decision over Marshfield's Parker Hammons (20-8).

Vince Houchins placed seventh at 157 for the Thunderbirds, registered eight points and went 3-2 with three pins. In the seventh-place match, Houchins (14-10) won by fall (4:00) over Cole Camp's Jason Clancy (12-24).

At 175, North Callaway's Benjamin Haubner placed ninth, posted 4½ points and went 3-2 with two pins.

Justice Moore and Gunnar Wenneker placed ninth at 215 and 285 for North Callaway, scoring four points and going 2-2 with two pins.

The Thunderbirds' John Higgins placed 10th, notched 2½ points and went 1-3. In the ninth-place match, Clinton's Hagan Sommers (7-7) won by fall (1:33) over Higgins (14-28).

At 106, North Callaway's Eli Borcherding placed sixth and scored two points, going 1-4 with a pin. To finish sixth, Borcherding (11-27) fell by technical fall-1.5 (4:32 [17-2]) against Hollister's Ryan Southern (9-18).

Christian Moore also tallied two points for the Thunderbirds, finishing 11th at 150 and going 1-3. In the 11th-place match, Christian Moore (19-23) won by medical forfeit over Boonville's Aidan Weir (9-12).

Getting a little less than two weeks to prepare, North Callaway competes on Day 1 of the Class 1 District 3 tournament on Feb. 16 at Marceline High School.
