Fulton girls wrestling’s Begemann finishes first in Buffalo Thundering Herd Tournament

BUFFALO -- Led by Emmy Begemann's first-place finish, the Fulton Hornets finished fifth out of 23 teams in the Buffalo Thundering Herd Tournament, their final regular season meet, Friday at Buffalo High School.

Fulton scored 64½ points, 19 away from tournament champion Blair Oaks. Rounding out the top three teams, El Dorado Springs placed second with 82½ points, and Nevada took third with 72½ points.

En route to earning gold, Begemann (125 pounds) went 5-0 with five pins and 22 points. In the first-place match, Begemann (44-7) won by fall (1:15) over Versailles's Frankie Shewmaker (32-9).

Olivia Weaver received silver at 110 for the Hornets, going 4-1 with four pins and 15 points. Nevada's Sydnee Baldwin (39-6) won by fall (4:55) over Weaver (38-12) in the championship bout.

Rilee Swaim, a Courtwarming Queen nominee, took third at 135 for Fulton, finishing 3-2 with three pins and eight points. In the third-place match, Swaim (38-13) won by fall (2:56) over Owensville's Kylie Bates (23-15).

Also a Courtwarming Queen nominee, Carly Foster placed third at 190 for the Hornets, going 2-2 with two pins and six points. To finish third, Foster (20-10) won by fall (1:27) over Owensville's Madison Lewis (27-15).

Scoring six points like Foster, Fulton's Karma Perry finished seventh at 120 and went 3-2 with three pins. In the seventh-place match, Perry (12-8) won by fall (:33) over Versailles's Olivia LaFoy (11-9).

The Hornets' Savannah Leeper placed sixth and tallied 5½ points with a 2-3 record and two pins. In the fifth-place match, Versailles's Grace Brantley (23-13) won by fall (3:09) over Leeper (26-10).

Adrienne Johnson placed seventh at 155 for Fulton, notching two points and going 1-3 with a pin. To finish seventh, Johnson (25-17) won by fall over Reed Springs's Lindsey Keithley (19-25).

Layne Simerl finished fourth at 235 for the Hornets, recording zero points and going 0-3.

Fulton competes on Day 1 of the Class 1 District 2 tournament next Friday at St. Charles West High School in St. Charles.
