South Callaway begins year with “great attendance”

South Callaway School District began on Aug. 23, with the start of the year getting off to a strong start.

Corey Pontius, Superintendent of South Callaway Schools, said the school year is going well.

"We have had great attendance to start the year, with focus on increasing attendance in the past few years," Pontius said.

He explained that attendance has gradually increased, with the school focusing on how to increase attendance.

Over the summer, South Callaway renovated the transportation buildings. Restrooms and a training room were added.

Pontius said the district is operating with a full staff this year.

"We are fully staffed, in which we feel very confident in our ability to serve our students," he said.

South Callaway provides iPads for all their students, which allows students to use technology as a tool for their education.

"A focus of ours is safety, in which we believe having a safe learning environment is solely based on the faculty of the school," Pontius said.

He explained that along with safety, personal relationship building between teachers and students allows for a comfortable environment, where the needs of all students are seen and validated.

"Our community is the backbone of our school, where they are extremely supportive, and is a major reason for our success as a school," he said.

He added the school is valued by the community, and this is shown through the success of South Callaway's athletics and academics.

Pontius said the district is always looking for ways to improve the school through community feedback.

South Callaway recently had members of the community fill out a survey regarding ways the school can be more involved in the community, along with other concerns they may have had.
