With Memorial Day quickly approaching, the Fulton American Legion Kingdom Post 210 has placed American flags at the gravestones of veterans at local cemeteries.

Post commander David Beaver said the group started placing flags shortly after World War II.

At Callaway Memorial Cemetery, close to 700 flags were placed this year.

Around 1,500 flags will be placed and handed out in total.

Post 210 also places flags at Hillcrest Cemetery and Southside Cemetery.

"We physically try to not miss any and put the flags out," Beaver said.

Post 210 has flags available to pickup to place at any cemetery.

To receive a flag for a veteran, contact Beaver at 573-220-7589 or Allan Nelson at 573-289-0477.

Saturday-Monday, the owners of Callaway Memorial Cemetery will have a canopy set up at the cemetery. Flags will also be left with them for pickup.
