WWU men’s T&F grabs seven event wins, places third at AMC Championships

ST. LOUIS -- The William Woods University men's track and field team placed third at the 2023 American Midwest Conference (AMC) Outdoor Track and Field championships.

The Owls collected seven event wins and 14 top-three finishes to tally 169 points.

Columbia College won with 189 points, and Missouri Baptist placed second with 187.

The Owls had 23 all-AMC recipients, with 16 earning first-team all-AMC, one earning second-team all-AMC and six making third-team all-AMC.

All-AMC honors are awarded based on the finish at the conference championship.

First place earns first-team all-AMC, second place earns second-team all-AMC and third place earns third-team all-AMC.

First-team all-AMC

  • Isaiah Buse -- 4x100-meter relay.
  • Rodney Cherilus -- 4x100 relay.
  • Landon Dunlap -- 800 run, 1,500 run, 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay.
  • Carlos Gomez -- 4x400 relay.
  • Riley Solan -- 400 dash, 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay.
  • Charles Pickens -- 4x100 relay.
  • Jacob Polacek -- 4x100 relay.
  • James Ruck -- 4x800 relay.
  • Dustin Russell -- 4x800 relay.
  • Ian Schwierjohn -- 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay.

Second-team all-AMC

  • Russell -- 3,000 steeplechase.

Third-team all-AMC

  • Easton Ambler -- 400 hurdles.
  • Cherilus -- 110 hurdles.
  • Gomez -- 400 dash.
  • Polacek -- 200 dash.
  • Schwierjohn -- 800 run and 1,500 run.

WWU results

100 dash (semifinals): Buse took third (11.59 seconds), Pickens ninth (11.81) and Polacek 10th (11.86).

100 dash (finals): Buse finished fourth (11.76).

110 hurdles: Cherilus took third (16.75), Ambler fourth (16.75) and Solan sixth (16.92).

200 dash (semifinals): Polacek took fourth (23.50), Buse 10th (23.84), Pickens 15th (PR of 24.16) and Gomez 18th (24.45).

200 dash (finals): Polacek finished third (personal record of 23.35).

400 dash: Solan took first (PR of 51.95), Gomez third (52.69), Cherilus 13th (56.68), Cherilus 13th (56.68) and Zachary Knopf 14th (PR of 57.62).

400 hurdles: Solan finished first (PR, second in the WWU record book at 57.61), Ambler third (PR of 1:00.65) and Cherilus fifth (PR of 1:01.46).

800 run: Dunlap took first (1:57.20), Schwierjohn third (2:02.93) and Ruck eighth (2:08.35).

1,500 run: Dunlap finished first (PR, WWU record and .27 off from NAIA Standard at 3:55.27), Schwierjohn third (PR, third in WWU record book at 4:01.35), Jenson Starr fifth (4:13.28) and Chase Tennyson 12th (PR of 4:55.80).

3,000 steeplechase: Russell took second (PR, fifth in WWU record book at 10:18.83), Freddy Zheng fifth (PR of 12:07.40) and Layne Norris sixth (12:39.82).

5,000 run: Starr took fifth (16:05.44) and Russell eighth (PR of 16:56.74).

10,000 run: Starr finished sixth (33:28.63).

4x100 relay: The team of Pickens, Polacek, Cherilus and Buse took first (44.12).

4x400 relay: The team of Gomez, Schwierjohn, Dunlap and Solan finished first (3:27.65).

4x800 relay: The team of Ruck, Russell, Schwierjohn and Dunlap placed first (third in the WWU record book at 8:15.62).

Long jump: Solan placed 14th (18 feet, 3.69 inches), Cherilus 19th (17-01.91) and Tyler Winslett 26th (15-10.55).

Triple jump: Pickens took fifth (PR of 41-02.49) and Cherilus 11th (36-04.22).

High jump: Polacek placed 10th (5-04.96) and Winslett 11th (PR of 5-02.99).

Shot put: Daulton Melton took fifth (PR of 44-11.37).

Hammer throw: Melton finished sixth (137-02.46).

Discus: Melton placed fourth (133-02.03).

Javelin: Winslett took seventh (PR of 130-08.11).
