Gibbs breaks career record, WWU baseball completes series sweep over HSSU

ST. LOUIS -- The William Woods University baseball team opened conference play with a three-game series sweep at Harris-Stowe State University.

Isaiah Gibbs broke the WWU career triples record in Game 2 of the series, grabbing the ninth of his career.

The Owls improve to 14-8 and begin conference play with a 3-0 record.

WWU Results

Game 1: William Woods won 12-4.

Game 2: William Woods won 17-2 (seven innings).

Game 3: William Woods won 9-0.

Up next

The Owls host the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Game 1

The Owls put up 10 runs in the first two innings. They added a run in the fifth and their 12th and final run in the sixth.

HSSU scored two in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Gibbs and Ian O'Malley each recorded home runs.

The Owls posted 11 hits, with eight players recording at least one hit.

Gibbs went 3-5 from the plate with a home run and a double; he scored twice and had an RBI.

Zach Krause went 2-3 from the plate with two RBI.

Pitching: Ryan Long (3-1) started on the mound and pitched five innings for the win. He struck out five and allowed no earned runs. Kohl Weber, Zach Judson and Andrew Fyffe threw as well.

Game 2

Gibbs broke the WWU career triples record in the top of the fifth with his ninth collegiate triple.

The Owls scored at least one run in six of the seven innings.

The Owls put up 17 runs and 21 hits, with 12 players recording at least one hit.

Six Owls recorded multiple hits.

Gibbs went 4-5 from the plate with a triple, a double, three runs and three RBI.

Vincent Pyeatt finished with a home run and four RBI.

Pitching: Brock Glavey (2-2) started on the mound and pitched five innings for the win. He struck out four and allowed just two runs. Jude Gremillion and Dylan McLone each pitched one inning in relief.

Game 3

The Owls scored three runs in the fourth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Matt Hanson hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Blain Tuepker went 2-3 from the plate with three runs scored and two RBI.

Krause brought home three RBI.

Pitching: Jared Stephens (3-1) started on the mound and pitched five innings for the win. He struck out five and allowed just three hits and no runs. Logan Blumhagen pitched two innings with four strikeouts. Kaleb Haley and McLone each pitched one inning.
