Sheriff's department reports February calls
The Callaway County Sheriff's Office released the calls for service data for February.
Throughout the month, deputies traveled more than 55,830 miles for patrols and investigations within the county. A total of 2,026 calls were recorded for February. This is a decrease from January, when 2,394 calls were recorded.
Prince hits a grand slam, William Woods softball sweep WC in dominating fashion
The William Woods University softball team swept NCAA Division III Westminster College Friday afternoon.
The Owls short-gamed the Blue Jays in Game 1 with Mariah Prince's grand slam and six RBI, 11-2. The team scored 10 in the second inning of Game 2, leading to a second five-inning win, 10-1.
With the sweep, the Owls improve to 5-16 on the season.

States, farmers seek clarity in new water pollution regulation
Federal water regulators and Missouri farmers want the same thing from a new rule set to be implemented later this month: Clarity.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers recently proposed a new definition of waters that will be subject to federal pollution regulations under the Clean Water Act. The new Waters of the United States (WOTUS) definition is intended to settle nearly a decade of debate around what bodies of water federal agencies can regulate.
The rule is meant to provide "clear rules of the road," according to a public fact sheet published by the agencies.
Westminster baseball drop rainy Game 1 to Grinnell
On Saturday, the Westminster College baseball team started a four-game series against the Grinnell College Pioneers. Unfortunately, the forecast forced the game to be held at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia.
Bode Gebbink (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) got the start on the mound for the Blue Jays. He would have a rough outing in the rain, pitching two innings and giving up six hits.

Express Care facility to open in Fulton
The Callaway County Commission and Jefferson City Medical Group entered into an agreement Monday to open an extended-hours Express Care facility in Fulton.
This is the first step in providing much-needed medical care access in the area, as Callaway County has been without extended hours healthcare facilities since the previous facilities closed.
SSM Health Family Medicine Clinic closed in 202o and Callaway Community Hospital closed in 2022, according to a release from JCMG.
Chamber to host Be Pro Be Proud
The Callaway Chamber of Commerce will host its first Be Pro Be Proud VIP Simulator Workshop Experience next week.
Be Pro Be proud is a workforce development initiative that introduces students to technical careers through virtual reality experiences, a release from the chamber states.
The initiative currently operates in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Electric cooperative to host public meeting on solar energy
Callaway Electric Cooperative is to host a public meeting to discuss solar facilities Wednesday.
State lawmakers who are sponsoring legislation concerning solar engergy will discuss their bills during the meeting.
The meeting will be held 7 p.m. at the cooperative's offices, 1313 Cooperative Drive.
The event will include discussions of House Bill 1052, sponsored by Rep. Mike Haffner, R-Pleasant Hill.
Mobile dental unit offering free dental care
The Elks Mobile Dental Unit will be in Columbia beginning next Monday, offering free dental care to eligible Callaway County residents.
The unit will be at the Columbia Elks Lodge #594 (4747 East Elks Park Drive) from Monday, March 20-Thursday, March 23.
This program aims to "bring primary care dental services to developmentally disabled children and adults throughout the State of Missouri," a release states.

City council recognizes Rotary Club
At Tuesday's Fulton City Council meeting, a proclamation was presented to the Fulton Rotary Club and several resolutions were discussed.
Mayor Lowe Cannell presented the proclamation to president Allen Huggins.
It recognizes Rotary Club's 100th anniversary. The club was chartered on March 15, 1923, and was founded by 22 men.
State requesting feedback on use of five HUD programs
The Missouri Department of Economic Development is requesting public feedback on the state's administration of five federal grant programs.
Missouri is required to regularly create a five-year consolidated plan to ensure that state agencies responsible for steering federal Housing and Urban Development grant programs share common goals.

Kiwanis learns about JAG program, upcoming events
Fulton Kiwanis heard about the Fulton Public Schools Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program at Thursday's meeting.
Leslea Alexander and two of her students spoke at the meeting about the program. Alexanders is the teacher of the JAG program at Fulton Middle School. The program is also offered at Fulton High School.
Alexander said the program works with students "who sometimes have a few more barriers in their lives."
South Callaway baseball dominates Callaway County Jamboree
On its home field, South Callaway dominated the Callaway County Baseball Jamboree, outscoring its opponents 13-0 while getting out of high-pressure situations to keep shutouts intact.
The Bulldogs beat Callaway Cup rival North Callaway 5-0, Fulton 3-0 and New Bloomfield 5-0 Wednesday at South Callaway High School.
South Callaway executed all facets of the game to get those results. In three three-inning games of jamboree action, the Bulldogs struck out 11, allowed seven hits, recorded seven hits (15 walks) and turned two double plays.
