The Rotary Club is celebrating its centennial in March 2023 and we are hoping to gather photos and stories from descendants of the founding members and other members from the last 100 years. The Fulton Rotary Club was chartered in March 1923 by twenty-two business and professional men. The Fulton Rotary Club has a history of service to the community, and participates in local, regional, national, and international projects.
At the 1923 weekly meetings held Friday noon at the Palace Hotel, the men were to be addressed by their given name or a nickname selected by them. The founding members and their nicknames were N.T. "Nick" Cave, E.C. "Slick" Henderson, T.H. "T" Grant, J.H. "Mike" Atkinson, M.F. "General" Bell, Dr. G.T. "Petey" Reily, Dr. J.B. "Burlie" McCubbin, Dr. G.D. "Greene" McCall, H. Clay "Mud" McGregor, L.U. "Uncle Luther" Nickell, W.F. "Dub" Smith, Matt "Matt" Wymore, John "John" Pratt, C.E. "Curt" Blattner, Dr. E.E. "Elmer" Reed, S.K. "Blick" Black, R.H. "Dick" Crossfield, R.O. "Oscar" Baker, J.R. "Jim" Tucker, Ovid "Ovid" Bell, B.H. "Bo" Jameson, and W.E. "Ed" Jameson.
These men represented a cross section of Fulton professionals and businesses in 1923. There was a State Senator, a bank vice president, an architect, a dentist, two doctors with different specialties, an executive at the Fulton Fire Brick Company, manager of the Palace Hotel, an undertaker, a theater owner, the President of Westminster College, a professor at William Woods College, a druggist, a ladies ready to wear store owner, a bookstore owner, a newspaper owner, the Ford dealer, an insurance salesman, a dry cleaning and tailoring shop owner, an oil company owner, and a real estate agent.
