Sixth-seeded Winfield shocked No. 3 seed North Callaway boys basketball, beating the Thunderbirds by a score of 58-51 in the opening round of the Bowling Green Tournament Tuesday evening at Bowling Green Middle School.

Winfield led by just one point at halftime, 26-25, before North Callaway took a five-point lead after three quarters, 41-36. However, the Warriors outscored the Thunderbirds 22-10 in the fourth quarter.

Peter Nicholl guided Winfield's offense with 16 points, including four 3s. The Warriors' Kaden Kaimann had 14 points (two 3s) and Brady Creech 13.

Meanwhile, North Callaway was absent two starters, with Isiah Craighead injured (could be back Thursday) and Matthew Weber forced to sit out by the official.

Under those circumstances, the Thunderbirds' Samuel Pezold recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 points along with a team-high 10 rebounds. North Callaway's Braydn O'Neal registered 12 points and led the team with seven assists, while Trenton Jones had 12 points, six rebounds and a team-high three blocks.

With the result, North Callaway drop to 10-8, while Winfield improve to 6-11.

"We just didn't get it done in the fourth quarter," North Callaway coach Matt Miller said. "They made the shots, and we didn't."

Winfield made 8-of-13 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. The Warriors leading scorer in the quarter had two 3-pointers, a 2-pointer and went 2-for-2 from the line.

"He's a really good shooter," Miller said. We just didn't pick him up in that fourth quarter. We have to play like we have been playing, and we'll at least have one of the players back."

No. 3 seed North Callaway will face No. 2 seed Clopton (13-5) -- who was stunned in a 47-42 loss against No. 7 seed Bowling Green -- in the consolation bracket at 6:50 p.m. Thursday at Bowling Green Middle School. Last Friday, the Hawks beat the Thunderbirds 61-59 in Clarksville.
