No. 8 seed South Callaway girls basketball lost 45-18 against No. 1 seed Community in the opening round of the 39th Annual Sturgeon Tournament Monday night at Sturgeon High School in Sturgeon.
As a result, the Lady Bulldogs fall to 0-14 on the season, while the Lady Trojans improve to 15-2.
Community led after each of the four quarters -- 19-6, 29-9, 41-14 and 45-18.
Regan Arrowood scored a team-high nine points, while Lacey Matthews had five for South Callaway.
"Girls played hard against a very tough opponent," South Callaway coach Daniel Burns said. "They are a very good, well-coached team, and there is a reason why they are the one seed in the tournament. I was proud of how hard our girls played, and defensively we did some good things. Their defensive pressure gave us some issues, and in the end, we made too many mistakes to give ourselves a chance."
Up next, No. 8 seed South Callaway will take on Show-Me Conference rival, No. 5 seed New Bloomfield (3-14) in the consolation bracket of the Sturgeon Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sturgeon Middle School in Sturgeon. In their first meeting this season, the Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Bulldogs 35-24 in the seventh-place game of the South Callaway Tournament on Jan. 13.
