The last time New Bloomfield girls basketball played Sturgeon, they won by five points in New Bloomfield on Dec. 30.
This time, No. 5 seed New Bloomfield faced No. 4 seed Sturgeon on its court and lost 55-39 in the opening round of the 39th Annual Sturgeon Tournament Monday evening. The Lady Wildcats fall to 3-14, while the Lady Bulldogs jump to 6-11.
New Bloomfield's offensive woes led to Sturgeon outscoring them in all four quarters -- 20-16, 10-6, 13-12 and 12-5.
Brooklyn Daugherty scored a game-high 14 points, while Allie Heath had 12 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, Avery Nichols notched 12 points, and Myah Briggs had eight for the Lady Wildcats.
"We struggled to make shots throughout the whole game," New Bloomfield coach Brett Craighead said. "We will have to regroup and be ready to play Wednesday."
Next, No. 5 seed New Bloomfield will face in-county, No. 8 seed South Callaway (0-14) in the consolation bracket at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sturgeon Middle School. It'll be an excellent chance for the Lady Wildcats to rebound, as their last victory came against South Callaway on Jan. 13 in Mokane; New Bloomfield won the game 35-24.
