Dunlap wins 800, William Woods men’s track & field has nine top-15 finishes at NAIA/JUCO Challenge

William Woods University men's track and field team had 14 compete at the NAIA/JUCO Challenge hosted by Pittsburg State University Saturday in Pittsburg, Kansas. The meet was the first of 2023 and their second overall for the indoor season.

The Owls had nine place in the top 15, and Landon Dunlap walked away with a win in the 800-meter run. The team tied for 14th out of 22 NAIA and junior college teams with 20 points.

Sprints

Dunlap won the 800-meter run out of 29 runners with a time of 1:55.42, tying his personal record. He beat the next runner by just .01 seconds and missed the NAIA "B" standard by .17 seconds.

In the 60-meter hurdles, all three runners set new PRs. Easton Ambler wrote himself fourth in the WWU record book with his 9.28 seconds, and Rodney Cherilus broke into the record book with a 9.36 seconds time. Riley Solan also set a PR with his 9.37 time.

Distance

Ian Schwierjohn set two new PRs. He placed sixth in the mile with a 4:35.26 time and 15th in the 3,000-meter run with a 9:17.25 time.

Jenson Starr shaved over 45 seconds off his previous 3,000 PR, placing 11th with a 9:08.13 time.

Relays

The 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Zachary Knopf, Solan, Jacob Polacek and Carlos Gomez, placed 13th with a 3:44.61 time.

Throws

Daulton Melton marked his name fifth in the WWU record book in the weight throw with his fourth-place, 15.59-meter throw. He also placed 11th in the shot put with a 12.61-meter throw.

Jumps

Polacek placed seventh in the high jump with a 1.65-meter jump. Tyler Winslett placed ninth with a 1.55-meter jump.
