Fulton girls basketball tops Tolton

Fulton girls basketball won its first game in just over two weeks, after beating Tolton 54-42 Tuesday in Fulton.

It was also the Hornets' first-ever home game at the Legends Rec Plex, which is where Fulton's junior varsity boys basketball team has its home conference games.

Up 20-19 at halftime, Fulton pulled through with a high-scoring 26-point four quarter, which included six made free throws and four 3s. The Trailblazers scored in double figures in both second-half quarters (10 points in the third, 13 in the fourth), but the Hornets' offensive onslaught in the final eight minutes was too much for Tolton.

Jayna Hegdpath led Fulton offensively, registering a team-high 11 points. The Hornets spread their offense, as Fulton had five players score at least five points; eight of the team's 10 players that played scored.

Meanwhile, Sadie Sexauer scored a game-high 17 points, while Jilian Aholt had 13 for the Trailblazers. Unlike Fulton, Tolton had a few players doing a bulk of its work offensively, as just three Trailblazers had at least five points.

"The girls played very hard and continue to show why I am so proud of them," Fulton coach Matt Wilbers said. "Given the season we have had and the record we possess it's becoming that time of the year that it would be very easy to throw in the towel, but this group continues to come to practice every day and put in the work.

"Every game matters to them, and they're constantly improving. They're all playing for one another, and that's keeping everyone's minds positive and working hard. We have very little time to celebrate as we turn around and play Bowling Green tonight at home."

Next, Fulton (5-14) will host Bowling Green at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Fulton High School. In their first meeting this season, the Lady Bobcats beat the Hornets 43-33 in the seventh-place game of the Montgomery County R-II Varsity Basketball Invitational on Dec. 2.

"Bowling Green has already beaten us once this year in the Montgomery County tournament, but we are an improved team, and so are they, so this should be a fun night tonight," Wilbers said.
