The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society (KCHS) changed its window display at the KCHS Museum Friday morning to display information about upcoming Lifelong Learning classes.
The classes -- also called Triple L classes -- are designed for local history buffs to "discover the rich heritage of Fulton and Callaway County," according to the KCHS website.
The classes are hosted at the KCHS Research Center, located at 106 East 4th St.
The first Triple L class for the fall is "'Shady,' Excavating a Dinosaur with Dr. David Schmidt" on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Schmidt, who is an associate professor of environmental science and geology at Westminster College, will discuss the process and history of searching for a dinosaur. Sample bones of the dinosaur and photos of the dig site will be at the class.
On Oct. 2, the "Mule Industry in Callaway County" will be at 1:30 p.m. This class will feature Callaway veterinarian Robert Barnett and mule breeder Tony Michelle to discuss the history of mules in the county.
On Oct. 10, the Triple L class will be about "Ruth Harris, Educational Leader." This class will be at 1:30 p.m., and will feature Vanessa Garry, associate professor at the University of Missouri -- St. Louis. She will discuss Harris, who "broke barriers as the first African American female president of Harris-Stowe State University," the KCHS website states.
The Triple L class for Oct. 13 is the not hosted at the KCHS Research Center. The class "Outhouse -- History, Hype and Humor with Tom Jones" will be hosted at the Auto World Museum (200 Peacock Drive) at 2 p.m. This class will discuss the history of outhouses.
The final class for 2023 will be the "Works of Jesse Howard" on Nov. 6. at the KCHS Museum (513 Court St.) at 1:30 p.m. This class will feature Tanna Schmidli and Linda Crump, who are the granddaughters of folk artist Jesse Howard. They will discuss his art and the lasting impact it has.
The window display at the museum showcases photographs and artifacts related to the classes. On display is a newspaper article highlight Howard's art, a sign for Missouri Hybrid Corn Co. and a drawing of an outhouse.
Classes are $15 for nonmembers and $10 for members. Each class is limited to 20 spots.
