Our House fundraiser set for Memorial Park

The annual fundraiser for Our House will be at Memorial Park in Fulton today.

This year's fundraiser includes barbecue, yard games, raffles, face painting and a bounce house.

Rachel Salmons, Our House board member, said the fundraiser helps fund the organization's rising operating costs, including utilities for the organization's two houses that are used for temporary housing.

Our House "provides shelter for homeless" in the community, Salmons said, adding the organization helps in "trying to come up with a job."

Our House board member Aaron White says the goal of the barbecue is to "meet the community" and to "build support" for the organization.

White said "lack of affordable housing" is a chief issue in the community that is being addressed by a newly formed task force through Central Missouri Community Action. He adds that Our House is actively working to address the housing crisis in Callaway County.

Salmons said most people who use Our House's services work, but those who do not are encouraged to volunteer to give back to the community. The organization's goal, she adds, is to stabilize people and move them into permanent housing.

"Homelessness is not an individual problem," Salmons said, adding that Our House aims to help the community.

The fundraiser is 4-7 p.m. near Memorial Park's splash pad. There is no admission fee and activities like face painting and a bounce house are free, donations are encouraged.

Hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and pulled-pork sandwiches are available for $3 each. Chips, soda and cookies are available for $1 each.

Raffle tickets are available for purchase, with prizes including a gift card to Brooklyn Pizza.
