William Woods men’s soccer loses conference opener against Hannibal-LaGrange

William Woods men's soccer had the more clinical attack but it was enough, as the Owls lost 5-3 against American Midwest Conference opponent Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday in Hannibal.

Each team had 10 shots on goal, but Woods' had a higher rate of shots on target. The Owls were outshot 22-15 by the Trojans.

Hannibal got on the board first with a goal from Mason McQueen in the 21st minute.

The Owls netted the next two, taking the lead in the 38th minute. Lubos Polacko scored Woods' first, while Florian Senst bagged the second.

Even though Woods' five shots were seven less than the Trojans', the Owls were up 2-1 at halftime.

After halftime, Hannibal responded by scoring three goals without an answer. Benjamin Contreras scored the first goal of the second half in the 54th minute, then Jorge Galindo scored the next two in the 59th and 70th minute.

Omar Arield Murillo Hernandez scored Woods' only goal in the second half in the 72nd minute.

Seven minutes later, the Trojans' Galindo netted a hat trick and capped the scoring off in the 79th minute.

The Owls were without goalkeeper Iker Gonzalez for the final two minutes plus added time, as he was given a straight red card. The referee dished out six yellow cards and one red in the match -- Woods received two yellows and one red while Hannibal had four yellows.

Before getting sent off, Gonzalez saved four shots on 10 attempts.

Next up, William Woods (1-5-2, 0-1 AMC) will face conference opponent Central Baptist College (7-1-1, 1-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Conway, Arkansas.
