North Callaway softball matches season-high in hits, beats Montgomery County

North Callaway softball's bats were too much for Montgomery County as the Ladybirds beat the Lady Wildcats 12-3.

For the third time this season, North Callaway recorded a season-high 14 hits. With those hits and three Montgomery County errors, the Ladybirds scored 12 runs.

Meanwhile, the Lady Wildcats scored three runs on nine hits and five errors.

Lauren Speight (5-6) was credited with the victory. She pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs, one earned on nine hits and no walks while striking out three.

Montgomery County pitcher Madison Queathem was tagged with the loss, pitching seven innings.

Queathem helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles.

North Callaway's Corynne Miller led the Ladybirds offensively, going 4-for-5 while scoring and driving in two runs each; she also stole two bases. Another North Callaway hitter with a good performance was Olivia Knoepflein, who went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI; she also notched one steal.

"We threw the ball out a little bit in the first inning," North Callaway softball coach Mariah McKee said. "That's when we had three errors that allowed the two runs. Then after that, we made all the plays that had to be made. And we hit the ball well."

North Callaway (4-7) will compete in the Versailles/California Turf War, playing California (9-7) in its first game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in California, Missouri.
