North Callaway softball upsets California

by Robby Campbell | September 21, 2022 at 4:00 a.m.

In what was probably North Callaway softball's best game of the year, the Ladybirds upset California 7-2 Tuesday in Auxvasse.

The Lady Pintos -- a class above North Callaway -- only four losses heading into the game were against state-ranked schools. They also had one less win than Hallsville, who the Ladybirds lost to Monday.

In the first inning, California scored one run but North Callaway scored three runs in the bottom half. Kymorie Myers hit an RBI single that inning.

Myers hit a two-run triple later in the game and drove in three of the Ladybirds' six RBI.

North Callaway added an insurance run in the sixth. The Lady Pintos scored their only other run in the fifth after they stringed two hits together.

Lauren Speight (4-6) was the winning pitcher for the Ladybirds. She went all seven innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out two.

California registered two runs on 10 hits and committed two errors, while North Callaway scored seven runs on nine hits and one error.

"California is a really good baseball club, noted for their hitting," North Callaway coach Mariah McKee said. "Lauren Speight scattered all the hits tonight. Did a great job on the mound. And we put our heads together and did a good job defensively. Definitely, something we can build on."

Next up, North Callaway (4-7) will play conference opponent Montgomery County (3-10) at 5 p.m. Thursday in Auxvasse.
